Designer/Label of the Week
Menswear has taken off in the last couple years. Designers and labels are popping up everywhere. The interesting/frustrating thing is that many of them are unattainable to the average consumer. Each Tuesday I’ll highlight a designer or label I really like that’s accesible. Cause let’s be honest, what’s the point of talking about something you can’t actually buy?
So here we go: Gant. It was founded in 1949 in New Haven, CT. Founder Bernard Gant came over as an immigrant from the Ukraine in 1914. After years of hard work in the garment district of NYC, he started the Gant label. For a while Gant was one of the biggest suppliers of shirts in the states. This eventually led to Gant gaining somewhat of a cult following in the 1960s among college aged males. However, after the 1960s they fell into the background of American style and just about disappeared. Recently, they were acquired by a Swiss company that has resurrected the brand. Now with a hint of European flair but a strong grounding in classic American style, Gant is back. They’ve got quality products built around the classics. What I love about Gant: Heavy Oxford cloth fabric shirts, strong wool sweaters and classic trousers. Gant is the epitome of American style. They have three different lines:
1) Gant
2) Gant Rugger
3) Gant by Michael Bastian
